Showing my colors!

When I was little, my mom told me once that my father had wanted a son first.
I was appalled. A boy? Ick! Yuck! Good grief! I had all the wrong parts! So, it comes with little surprise that being the wrong gender didn't stop my father from trying his best to make me the son he really wanted.

From watching Star Trek together, to cutting grass and racking leaves, and movie trivia, my father and I were inseparable. As I've grown older, my father and I are still thick as maple syrup and often call on each to lean, to listen, and to lift each other up. One thing I've taken away from my relationship with my father is, well, my love of football.

As we approach Thanksgiving (in the U.S.), nothing is more traditional than turkey and football on Thanksgiving Day. I'm a Pittsburgh Steeler's fan. Period. In the rough, rebuilding years, through the Super Bowl wins, and now, during the drama with Ben and our rollarcoaster offense. I nearly married a man who was also a diehard fan.

As a teenager, I often found myself alone in my love affair with football. My girl friends thought I was nuts. Now, I've found many more women who love football like I do. Diehard, schedule events around Sundays and wait impatiently for the season to kick off in August.

That got me to thinking...Why do you think women love football? Post your comments about your love affair with football by Saturday, 11/26/10, and I'll draw a name for a gift certificate to BTP.

  1. I'm not really into football now but when I was, my favorite team was the Steelers of the 70's!

  2. George,
That's when I fell in love with the team, in the 70s.

  3. This is my third time trying to post a comment. I love sports period, any sport. Football being my fave. More and more women are starting to watch all sports now. I'm one of eight kids, 5 girls and three boys. I am the only girl to watch football. I actually started watching sports thanks to a bet by my cousin on a baseball game. I won that bet.
I am a Cowboy fan, but I also love the Saints, since I am from Louisiana.

  4. I haven't been into pro-ball for a long time. I've got to say though i grew up in a cowboys above all else family. I am blessed with pro drafted uncles and a couple of cousins. Girl or no, the convos in our (family) homes are centered on football. (three highschool football coaches in the family now) pre season, post season play cards hand signals, uniforms, district lines the conversations are long and some times heated. And you don't start talking unless you know what you're talking about b/c even the youngest member can sniff out a fraud. My heart is high school and college ball. I Love it.. There in no competition nor comradery like high school play. And no one does it like Texas!

  6. I grew up on a rural farm 40 miles from Pittsburgh. No close neighbors, an antenna on the roof for a television that got 3 channels on a clear day. As a kid back then, I watched what my Dad wanted to watch. My dad was (and now in his eighties, still is a diehard Steelers fan) he definitely had an impact on me. I've been married three times and not one of my husbands was as rabid about football, especially Steelers football, as I am.
In the past few years I have had the privilege of taking my dad to several Steelers’ home games. He loved it, because he’d never attended a live Steelers game, but it was hard for me not to feel just a little nostalgic and remember growing up watching the days of the Steel Curtain on the little television in the living room. I still feel like a kid when I watch football with my Dad and there are many times I wish I still was.

  7. I started watching with my husband. We were season ticket holders for the Bears. I really got into the game. There is something about being there, enjoying a common element with thousands of people. Cheering your team. After I had children, football took a back seat. My husband is still obsessed with sports and my children are too. I see the same Passion for the game being exhibited by the them that I once had. It's just an undescriable feeling of camaraderie. Da Bears.

  8. I think women love football for many of the same reasons men do--it's exciting to watch athletes working together to WIN! And there's the added plus that some of these athletes are easy on the eyes :)

I'll try not to hold it against you, being a Cowboy fan. Soooo don't like them. Booo!

  10. Yes, some of the players are VERY easy on the eyes, like Mark Sanchez of the Jets. Yummy!
